In the Upper School, students may choose to take physical education classes during the school day or try out for interscholastic teams practicing and competing after school. Riverdale fields
27 varsity teams in sports for boys and girls, and junior varsity teams in most of these. Games are scheduled with independent and public schools of similar size and level of skill.

Middle School

Middle School students learn a variety of sports in intramurals and classes, where they are challenged to do their best and encouraged to work together. Since New York State law prohibits sixth graders from participating in interscholastic sports, a well-developed intramural program is in place for them to enjoy. Through the physical education program, sixth graders play in a non-competitive format against other sixth-grade programs. Where possible, groups of sixth graders from Horace Mann, Fieldston, and Dalton compete in what we call Friendship Games. When scheduling conflicts prevent us from holding events with other schools, inter-squad tournaments called Color Games take place. The sixth and seventh graders also have the opportunity to participate in an after-school activity called Falcon Club, an intramural sports program. In the fall and spring, students participate in outdoor activities appropriate for the respective season. During the winter season, the Falcon Club plans trips to Chelsea Piers, where students participate in basketball, soccer, rock climbing, and gymnastics.

The athletic experience for seventh and eighth graders is designed to develop the athlete’s individual skills and their ability to play effectively as a team and to help further their development as young men and women. Practices occur after school, typically three days a week with an optional fourth day during the pre-season period – Monday through Thursday. Games are typically, but not always, played on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Teams play 6-10 games per season.
