Varsity athletes from the fall boys' and girls' teams along with Riverdale's falcon mascot attended the Lower School assembly on Friday to pump up school spirit for Homecoming.
The athletes led school cheers with the younger students and read them poems inspired by their sports: volleyball, soccer, tennis, football, cross country, and field hockey.
Here some examples:
The ball comes to me,
And I kick the ball back.
We're look to score,
So we're on the attack.
We slip past defenders
with sure-footed play,
'Til only the goalkeeper
Stands in our way.
I pass to a teammate
Who shoots ... it looks wide.
The goalkeeper lunges,
But luck's on our side.
The ball hits a goalpost,
Then goes in the net.
We're down only 10
And may win this game yet!
My goldfish took up tennis.
They installed a little net
At the bottom of their fish tank
For their first official set.
They've got tennis balls and racquets,
They've got tennis shoes and shorts,
For my fish are fond of tennis,
More than any other sport.
It's a funny thing to watch them
When they practice every day
As the balls they serve each other
Always float away!
Crouched and ready I wait for the spike,
My feet touch the floor, ever so light.
An open hand, and the spike is a "tip,"
Someone is yelling as I bite my lip.
I spring into action and dive for the ball.
I stretch out my hand, make contact, and fall.
It's a perfect up, I roll out of the way,
As the setter sets and our team makes the play.
Of course it's just right and our team makes the volley,
And it's all because I made no folly.
To race down field with all my speed,
To dodge and duck and slip and twist
To fool the defense, make them miss.
And still untouched...I don't know how.
I score a touchdown, and we've won.
I love football. Football's fun.
