Riverdale teachers will lead a student trip to Detroit that will focus on economic development, arts, and the city's changing population.
Detroit, the largest American city to declare bankruptcy, has been trying to rebuild since 2014 when it exited from bankruptcy protection. Dr. Elizabeth Pillsbury, a history and urban studies teacher, and Emily Schorr Lesnick, Upper School director of service learning, led the first Riverdale trip to the city last year and will return with a new group of students in April.
The four-day trip will examine the range of challenges faced by Detroiters in the areas of food access, housing, public transportation, education, and employment. Students will meet with civic organizations, government representatives, documentary filmmakers, and neighborhood groups.
Riverdale also organizes service learning opportunities in New Orleans, Birmingham, AL., and the New York metropolitan area.
