Cole Harrop of the foreign language department and Emily Scalfani of the history department recently took part in courses sponsored by The Academy for Teachers, an organization that sponsors in-depth courses led by leading scholars.
Teachers must be nominated to take part in the group's Master Classes. Scalfani attended "The Legal History of Marriage Equality," a Master Class in constitutional law led by Sharon Marcus, dean of humanities at Columbia University. Harrop attended "Moral Philosophy: Plato and Aristotle" taught by Geoffrey Sayre-McCord, a professor at the University of North Carolina.
The Academy for Teachers limits attendance in its programs to 18 educators.
Harrop, the chair of the foreign language department, teaches Latin and French as well as Integrated Liberal Studies, a required interdisciplinary course for seniors. Scalfani, the history department chair, co-teaches Constructing America, a required interdisciplinary course for juniors.
