Hacking For Good
Posted 12/13/2016 05:17PM

The young tech innovators at the Agile Youth Challenge NYC yesterday were asked to create ways to improve civic engagement and voter education.

They "hacked," meaning they used technology and code to design new apps. Meeting for the better part of a Sunday, they incorporated an array of devices, tools, and coding languages — including Processing, Scratch, Swift, Javascript, LiveCode, Python, and App Inventor — to build their ideas, create demos, and pitch their concepts to professional developers.

The event, which was held on the Riverdale campus, was the fifth hackathon sponsored by AYCNYC. The group was formed by technology teachers from Riverdale and other New York City schools. A sixth event will be held at Avenues:The World School in the spring.

An Upper School team comprised of four Riverdale students and two students from Millennium Brooklyn High School and Bronx Academy for Software Engineering created a Google Chrome extension that they called "Verify," which would help readers identify whether a news article is reliable based on reader polls and algorithms.  Their concept tied for first place in the high school category; a team from Central Yeshiva University High School for Girls was selected as the other first place high school team for their "GoVote" app.

A team from Saint Ann's in Brooklyn took first in the Middle School division.

The sponsors of the event were Riverdale Country School, Bronx.Tech, Upperline School of Code, Genuis, NY Tech Alliance, Codesters, Laconia Capital Group, TheNorthwest.com, CDWG, and the Riverdale Pie Guys.
