Elias Swartz '21 and Sophie Walsh '21 are among 26 New York City eighth graders who have been chosen to participate in a new year-long experience designed to encourage purposeful learning.
The program, nXu, was developed by educators from independent, public, and charter schools in the city. Beginning this summer, the students will spend two weeks on an all-expense-paid program at Chewonki in Maine. Then the group will meet six times during the school year to reflect on their experiences, participate in hands-on skills modules that are not covered in traditional school programs, and explore big life questions through reading and discussions. The students will receive mentoring from a working professional in a field of interest.
The program drew applications from 109 students from 28 different New York City middle schools. A group interview weekend was held in partnership with the staff of Riverdale Country Schools to assess leadership, critical thinking, and group work abilities.
