 | Once upon a time there was a man named Frank who taught athletics and coached legendary football teams. He started a day camp that his children attended as campers and counselors. Years later he passed on that camp to Bob who taught athletics and coached legendary basketball teams and who sent his children as campers and counselors to the camp. Years later he passed on that camp to Jim, a legendary teacher and coach in his own right. Jim's daughter was part of the camper tradition and now is a professor of education. All of them: Frank, Bob, and Jim, were assisted by Sylvia, who made sure that all the details were in place year after year. Now John is in charge of the legendary Camp Riverdale, and his children are a part of the camper and counselor tradition. A camper under Frank, a counselor under Bob and Jim, John nurtures this legacy with respect and care.
A six year old camper, in her first summer at Camp Riverdale, concluded,"This is the best camp anywhere. I want to be a Riverdale counselor some day when I am big." A ten-year old camper in her fourth summer remarked, "Why would anyone want to go anywhere else? We have the best activities and the friendliest counselors."
To the many generations of campers and counselors that will come after us, John reminds us once again of words that he learned from the generations before him: A hundred years from now it will not matter the kind of house I lived in, the kind of car I drove, or the amount of my salary; only that I made a difference in the life of a child.
It is our hope that Camp Riverdale, now celebrating its 50th year, has made a difference, and that it will continue in this tradition for many decades to come. |
