In 2020, dance instructors from Ailey Arts In Education & Community Programs returned to the Lower School for their annual two-week residency at the Lower School, a relationship that began in 2009. They work with all students, PreK through Grade 5, teaching Alvin Ailey’s choreography and his artistic vision that explored black history and culture through dance. At the conclusion, students put on a performance demonstrating their choreographed routines. The Ailey team links Riverdale’s academic curriculum and character themes, providing another outlet for the lessons taught in the classroom. This video, produced in 2017, describes how the Ailey residency supports Riverdale’s work around diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging. Watch video.
