On Oct. 11, Nathalia Tavares ’19 took her passions for theater, history, and social activism to a global stage.

Performing at U.N. Headquarters as part of the International Day of the Girl, Nathalia and three other teenagers channeled the voices of girls from around the world who had submitted essays, poems, monologues and other forms of creative writing describing what it meant to be a girl in some of the most difficult areas of the world.

“We had this duty to share these stories of girls who may not have the opportunity to share them themselves,” Nathalia said. “These stories are very difficult to tell. They describe such hardship.”

Nathalia helped develop the piece under the guidance of Spark Movement, an organization dedicated to activism for girls. She was introduced to the group through her Riverdale teacher, Emily Schorr Lesnick.

Nathalia and her three counterparts met three times a week for about five weeks as they put the script together and rehearsed. Nathalia wrote two poems that became part of the script: "Girls Are In Crisis When ..." and "Together Girls Can ..."

During the Day of the Girl event, the students performed in the Economic and Social Chamber (ECOSOC) surrounded by U.N. dignitaries and girls from all over the world. The program alternated between live speeches and commentary from the four actors.

The experience, Nathalia said, “gave me a new purpose in my acting. It opened my eyes to the theater of social activism, using theater to share ideas and raise awareness.”
