Riverdale Student Wins National "Chinese Bridge" Contest
Posted 04/03/2018 12:05PM

Max Horne '19 took first place among advanced Mandarin students at the Chinese Bridge Speech Contest in Boston on March 31.

As a result of his performance, he will be considered for the international Chinese Bridge Chinese Proficiency Competition for foreign secondary school students in China in October.

In an interview with China Daily after the event, Max said his interest in China began in fourth grade at Riverdale when he and his classmates studied the Silk Road. His speech, delivered in Mandarin, described how his study of Chinese had inspired him to "contemplate more deeply the true meaning of 'compassion.' "

The event was held at the Confucius Institute (CI) at the University of Massachusetts-Boston.

More than 20,000 students worldwide have participated in preliminary competitions in their home countries since the program began in 2008.

China Daily posted this video on Facebook about the event.
