Students Receive McKeon Research Grant
Posted 05/15/2019 09:41AM

Students worked in Riverdale's Lisman Laboratory last summer on spruce samples collected in the Arctic.

The Hudson River Environmental Society has awarded a McKeon Research Grant to three Riverdale students who are studying the effects of climate change on the white spruce.

Jacob Katz '20, Obioha Chijioke '20, and Knut Vanderbush '20 will share the $1,000 grant. The three students are among a group of Riverdale students and faculty who have traveled to Alaska the last two summers to collect needle samples from white spruce trees growing at different latitudes within the Arctic treeline.

This summer, the students plan to investigate spruce trees growing in the New York area, which is the southern ecological boundary of the species, to see whether there are similarities in how the trees are adapting to climate change.

The work is part of an ongoing study by the Summer Science Research Program of Riverdale’s Lisman Laboratory, which is run by Dr. Rachel Cox of the Riverdale science faculty. The research augments work being done by Columbia University’s Department of Ecology, Evolution and Environmental Biology and the Toolik Field Station Institute of Arctic Biology.

McKeon Research Grants are awarded to high school, undergraduate, and graduate students interested in researching  Hudson Valley environmental issues.

The students also have received funding for their research from the Marjot Foundation and the Black Rock Forest Consortium.
