Black Rock Forest Consortium Awards Research Grant To Riverdale
Posted 05/14/2019 11:14AM

Riverdale is expanding the geographical scope of a study looking at the effects of climate change on Picea. Faculty and students have collected samples of Picea growing at the Arctic treeline, shown in this photo.

The Black Rock Forest Consortium has awarded $3,200 from the David Redden Conservation Science Fund to students investigating the effects of climate change on spruce trees with Dr. Rachel Cox, director of science research and the Lisman Laboratory for Molecular Ecology at Riverdale.

The students, Jacob Katz '20 and Knut Vanderbush '20, who wrote the research proposal, plan to collect and assess DNA methylation in Picea spruce leaf samples from individual trees at Black Rock Forest, a 3,870-acre forest and scientific field station in the Hudson Highlands. Sampling will take place at Black Rock and the laboratory investigations will be carried out at the Lisman Laboratory at Riverdale.

The project continues research done during the last two summers in northern Alaska. Students and faculty working with the Lisman Lab's Summer Science Research program have collected samples of the Picea growing at the Arctic treeline working in conjunction with Columbia University and the Toolik Field Station Institute of Arctic Biology.

The Black Rock Forest Consortium includes the American Museum of Natural History, Columbia University, New York University, Barnard College, independent schools, public schools, and other public and nonprofit agencies.

Students working on this research also have received funding from the Marjot Foundation and the Hudson River Environmental Society.
