Eighty years ago, the still-nascent Riverdale School for Girls moved to the Perkins estate, located along the Hudson River. The school was very small – the class of 1956 had just 17 students – and offered a rigorous college preparatory program. When the Girls School, the Boys School, and the Neighborhood School combined in 1972 to create the Pre-K through 12 school of today, the girls moved up to the Hill Campus. Still, the alumnae who had the privilege to attend the Girls School remember those days fondly.

On April 27, Jane Lisman Katz ’65 held a cocktail reception in her home for Girls School graduates to mark the 80th anniversary of the school’s move to the River Campus. Alumnae looked at yearbooks, photographs, and other memorabilia and listened to a performance by members of the Riverdale Jazz Ensemble directed by Jason Curry, the head of the Music Department. Gail Fletcher Edwards ’53 led the group in singing the school’s alma mater.

In attendance was Head of School Dominic A.A. Randolph, who spoke briefly about his vision for the school, including the construction of a new building designed specifically for grades three to five that will be built on the site of the Perkins Building. Work is expected to begin this summer. Chief Development Officer Bobbi Mark also gave details about an exciting opportunity for alumnae to support The Riverdale School for Girls Alumnae Scholarship, which will be awarded to a female student in need of financial assistance.

Among those in attendance were Helen Atlas ’49, Donnamarie Barnes ’74, Helene Bergman ’63, Lisa Birnbach '74, Ingrid Blanco ’64, Belinda Bralver ’73, Janet Carlson ’72, Jane Cuozzo ’70, Sharon Dane ’63, Alexandra Daniele ’68, Cornelia Eland ’59, Barbara Farnham ’56, Juliet Gal ’70, Anna Gannett ’71, Janine Golding-Ochsner ’74, Melissa Gordon ’65, Gail Grissetti ’64, Rachel Hadas ’65, Gail Hart ’65, Cathy Heller ’71, Bettyann Kevles ’55, Deborah Korzenik ’73, Terry Lajtha ’73, Liz Lasdon ’72, Linda Lindenbaum ’54, Robin Lynn ’66, Helen Metzger ’72, Susan Moldow ’63, Barbara Prager ’51, Suellen Schaffzin ’57, Carol Seigel ’66, Joan Seinberg ’58, Marjorie Straus ’58, Ellen Strickler ’53, Alice Tetelman ’58, and Karen Zahler ’68.
