Students who are capable of doing advanced work beyond the scope of regular courses may earn credit for an Independent Study. These Independent Studies can be versions of existing courses only in the art department. The IS’s must be roughly comparable to a regular course in time and effort involved and can only be used to satisfy the minimum requirements for graduation or the yearly course-load minimum if no other option is available. Except in the art department, teachers will not generally conduct more than one independent study at a time. An Independent Study Proposal form must be submitted no later than one week prior to the beginning of the term and must be approved by the department head, the faculty supervisor, the dean, and the Dean of Faculty. The amount of credit assigned (up to one credit for one year) will be determined by the teacher upon completion of the work with reference to contractual arrangements in the proposal.
