Learning Through Moving
Lower School Drama and Spanish teacher Helena Garrabou-Vancells explains the connection between movement and learning.
In first grade, students move toward independent reading and reading for meaning. Throughout the content areas, students are engaged in language-rich tasks and work on activities as a whole class, in small groups, and on their own.
Taking advantage of the school's natural resources, environmental science continues to be emphasized. Mathematics focuses on addition and subtraction, measurement, time, and money. Developmentally, children are becoming more socially aware; character skills, ethics, and the concept of community are woven into daily experiences. Formal instruction in Spanish begins in first grade and continues through fifth grade. Technology is incorporated into all aspects of the curriculum to deepen learning. Students work with specialized teachers in library, art, music, drama, robotics and engineering, health, and physical education.
