Music in the Middle School is a conduit for artistry and emotion for the youngest students of the Hill Campus. The human voice is a catalyst for much of the music studied in our program. The students enrolled in Choral music are vibrant, yet stimulated in their participation of corresponding grade level Choral groups. Technology projects and composition using the Apple-based Garage Band application are also a comprehensive part of the Middle School Music curriculum in choral and instrumental ensembles. Students in grades 6 and 7 with a background and interest in beginning or continuing a musical instrument can elect to enroll in exciting ensembles, such as a String Ensemble or Concert Band that features woodwind, brass, and percussion instruments.
Department of Music students begin to focus in their last year of Middle School (Grade 8) with longer and more frequent class meetings. These students have the opportunity to study in various performing groups, such as the 8th Grade Choral Ensemble, the RCS Orchestra, Wind Symphony, Concert Band, Jazz Combos, and RCS Jazz Ensemble. An assortment of co-curricular music activities include an After-School Jazz and Rock Ensemble, and various Chamber Music Groups, which feature bowed string and woodwind instruments, as well as piano, guitar, harp, percussion, and voice. We are proud of our high-caliber performing faculty who are active in their field, but who are also dedicated to their teaching and their students. We hope our students will have a lifetime involvement with music, whether as performers or listeners.
