Visual Arts

The overriding goal of the art experience in the Middle School is to experiment with materials. There are many projects involving a wide variety of activities and materials, including drawing, seeing, printmaking, clay, painting, collage, animation, constructing, photographing, and manipulating photographs.

Different projects address different goals. Some are designed to develop skill, patience, and discipline, some are designed to appeal to imagination and creativity, some are experiments with unfamiliar materials, some require collaboration and teamwork, and some require layers of thinking and planning.

We encourage students to learn from their failures and mistakes and to figure out which parts of their mistakes are worth repeating. We also urge them to talk about their work with and to each other.
