The Jazz Ensemble holds a master class with jazz musicians from the Hale School in Perth Australia.
When jazz bands get together, they generate some heat.
The Riverdale Country School Jazz Ensemble held a master class recently with 24 jazz musicians from the Hale School, an independent boys school in suburban Perth, Australia.
The Hale School students arrived in New York on Dec. 12 and spent the week visiting Riverdale classes and touring New York. On Friday, the Hale students performed at an Upper School assembly.
In the master class, students from both schools worked under the direction of the Hale teachers and Jason Curry, the director of the Riverdale Jazz Ensemble and the head of the Middle and Upper School music department. Hale teachers led them in an exercise to practice intonation and sight reading. Curry led them in an exercise of playing by ear, with solo bits by virtually every student.
Last spring, the Riverdale Ensemble visited the Hale School, along with stops in Melbourne and Sydney.
As part of the Hale trip to America, the students performed at Foxborough High School in Massachusetts and Choate-Rosemary Hall in Connecticut.
