Orchestra & Middle School String Ensemble Concert Showcases Student Musicians

The Riverdale Orchestra and Middle School String Ensemble recently performed several selections at their annual winter concert..
The Middle School String Ensemble, consisting of 13 violinists, two violists, a guitarist, 11 cellists, and three bassists, performed five pieces: the Phantom of the Opera Theme, Menuet (in the style of Porpora), the Beatles' Eleanor Rigby, Revenge of the Low Strings, and Brahms' Hungarian Dance No. 5 in G Minor.
The Orchestra featured 10 student violinists and teacher Judy Fletcher, three violists, eight student cellists and teacher Susan Poliacik, two double bassists, a flautist, two oboists, one clarinetist, and one French hornist. Conducted by music teacher John Lettieri, the orchestra performed Bach's Overture from Orchestra Suite No. 1 in C; Haydn's Movement I from Symphony No. 85 (La Reine) and Adagio – Vivace, Tchaikovsky's Sleeping Beauty Waltz, and Mendelssohn's The Hebrides Overture (Fingal's Cave).
Soloists in the Bach piece included Samantha Halem '18 and Renee Landzberg '16 on the oboe, Aditi Ahuja '14 and Ethan Cobb '17 on the cello, and Julia Cobb '17 on the harpsichord. Maddie Pintoff '19 was the soloist in the Porpora Minuet.
For the Orchestra, the violin section was led by Isabella Oropeza '14 and Saranya Vijayakumar '14, and the viola section was led by Jason Darell '14.
