Riverdale’s Technology Department believes that the best educational technology supports proven learning methods. We strive to build our students’ fluency with the most modern digital tools while simultaneously embracing Riverdale’s commitment to the arts, letters, and sciences.
The work of the Technology Department is to seamlessly merge technological tools with classroom experiences, encourage and support student learning outside the classroom, and create opportunities for student engagement in the learning process.
We focus on digital tools that improve learning: reading for meaning; new methods of communication and exchange; thoughtful data collection and analysis; and visualization and design in the arts, sciences, and humanities. We use collaborative online conversations in student blogs and Schoology; video communication platforms such as Skype and VoiceThread; online data gathering and analysis tools like Google Forms and Sheets; our expanding 3D printing, programming, and robotics initiatives.
Middle and Upper School students use Schoology, a cloud-based Learning Management System (LMS). With Schoology students can access course materials, submit assignments, and receive one-to-one teacher feedback. Teachers can post alerts and reminders, create and share multimedia materials, and securely conduct exams and quizzes. And Schoology’s collaborative features offer students and teachers a variety of ways of interacting with one another in a virtual classroom.
- We believe in learning first, technology second. Everything we do is intended to support student learning, and never to promote technology for its own sake.
- We believe in the value our teachers bring to their classroom and work with them to meet and extend their learning goals.
- We encourage our faculty to experiment.
- We support multiple avenues of technological professional development for our faculty and administration, all of which are directly tied to their curricular goals.
