Sparked by a standpoint performance by Michael Gardner '15, the Johns Hopkins University basketball team defeated top-seeded Swarthmore College on Feb. 24 for the 2018 Centennial Conference men's basketball championship.
Gardner hit six straight free throws in the final 21.5 seconds to lift Johns Hopkins to victory, 61-57. The team had been behind by nine points going into the second half of the game.
Earlier in the month, Gardner was the team's player of the week after he led his team to a pair of double-overtime victories. Assistant Head of School and Middle School Head Milton Sipp has been following Michael's season and attended a recent game in which Michael scored 18 points to help his team to victory. (photo below)
With the victory, Johns Hopkins advances to the NCAA Division III tournament. The bracket for the tournament will be announced on Feb. 26.
