Tips for Successful Reunions
Each fall Riverdale Country School opens its Hill and River Campuses for Homecoming, a celebration of our community past and present. This is also the time to celebrate significant reunion years. In recent years, reunions have been especially well-attended and very well received. Reunions bring generations of graduates together on campus to honor their experience at Riverdale Country School. It reconnects them with old friends as they meet current Riverdale students, their families, faculty, and staff who make up the vital Riverdale community today. Reunion 2017 committees are being formed now to plan class events revolving around meaningful past Riverdale experiences.
Homecoming is a day-long event, filled with athletic competitions, food, and fun activities for the whole family, culminating in the football game on the recently renovated Frank J. Bertino Memorial Field. Every reunion class will have special tables during the festive barbeque lunch where you can meet and greet old friends. Tours of the school, class photos, children’s activities, performances, and exhibitions will also be organized. During the day, all activities and meals for you and your guests are compliments of the school.
On Saturday evening, Riverdale is pleased to provide a cocktail reception and an elegant catered dinner on campus for each reunion class. These dinner parties are organized by our events planner at a reasonable cost per person. The dinner is usually the highlight of reunion weekend and many alumni end the evening with rekindled friendships and warm memories of their time at the school.
We also encourage each class to try and get together on the Friday evening before Homecoming. It is a great way to launch reunion weekend and reconnect with old friends. In years past, many classes have had cocktail (or dinner) receptions hosted by a classmate or have met at a local restaurant or club. Riverdale is happy to help you organize any of these off-campus events.
SPREAD THE WORD
When it comes to reunions, the more the merrier! So, well in advance of reunion weekend, please reach out to as many classmates as you can and encourage them to attend. If you talk to someone who cannot attend, get news and/or photos that we can share at reunion. The Alumni Office has contact information for many alumni but not everyone in each class. We’ll provide you with a current class list and if you have (or find) new addresses or other information we should know, tell us and we’ll update our database.
GIVE US THE GOODS
Do you have photos, recordings, videos, or other memorabilia from your years at Riverdale that you would be willing to share with the rest of your class? We can advise you on best practices from past reunions to create mementos for your reunion including:
- Memory books
- Special name tags
- Class pictures at reunion
TALK TO OTHER CLASSES
Stymied by what kind of party you’d like for your reunion? Reach out to other alumni who have planned reunions in years past to find out what worked and what didn’t. We’ll provide contact information so you can talk to other Riverdalians about what it takes to make your perfect reunion party.
As you reflect back on your memories of Riverdale, we hope you will choose to support the school with a meaningful gift. Your support helps ensure that current and future students receive the same high-quality, meaningful education you did and your gift will also build a bond between you and your alma mater.
We welcome reunion gifts of all sizes and hope alumni will participate at a level that is comfortable to them. Alumni who are celebrating their reunion often choose to give a gift above and beyond what they typically give to the school. Some may choose a significant one-year gift; a multi- or five-year pledge; or a special restricted gift that coincides with Riverdale's needs.
A Reunion Gift includes all new gifts and pledges received between the start of the fiscal year (July 1) following your last reunion, all the way to the end of the fiscal year (June 30) in which the current reunion takes place. All corporate matches and irrevocable planned gifts made during this period are also counted.
