Coinciding with Character Day 2016, a global event designed to promote character education, two educators from the Sumner School in Christchurch, N.Z., visited Riverdale on Thursday to learn how the school has incorporated character education into its programs.
Jill Pears, the associate principal, and Hannah Horgan, a classroom teacher, wanted to find out how Riverdale determined its strategy for this work. The visit came about a year after a group of Riverdale teachers and students visited the Sumner School in 2015 as part of a service-learning trip to learn how a community rebuilds after a devasating natural event. Riverdale plans to travel to Christchurch again in June.
In February 2011, a 6.3 earthquake heavily damaged Christchurch, New Zealand’s second largest city, killing 185 people and becoming the country's second deadliest natural disaster. The estimated cost for rebuilding the city is $40 billion, and it is expected to take 50 to 100 years for the area to completely recover.
The teachers described their visit to Riverdale in this video.
