Students from six Bronx public middle schools are participating in a new program, Bronx Connections, that features academic enrichment, athletics, and field trips to noteworthy New York City destinations such as Wave Hill, Arthur Avenue, the New York Botanical Gardens, and the Science Barge.
The 22 students are rising seventh and eighth graders; ten of the students took part in a pilot last year. They were selected on the basis of recommendations from their schools. The program is led by six members of the Riverdale faculty drawn from athletics, science, humanities, arts, and the Learning Research Team. Six mentors -- two Riverdale Upper School students and four recent Riverdale graduates -- provide additional support.
The students will spend six days on campus from June 29 through July 7. They will meet with their faculty mentors throughout the following school year.
Beginning in January 2018, the Upper School will offer a mini-course to support the Bronx Connections program. Riverdale students will receive leadership training and help create opportunities for the Bronx Connections students.
