The Lower School encourages communication between parents and teachers, and welcomes parental involvement in school activities. Parents may take part in the Parents Association, the Lower School International Parents Committee, and the Parents of Color organization. Homecoming and Community Action Day are community-wide celebrations. The Community Engagement Team hosts all-school social events for families as well.
In September, the Lower School invites new Pre-K and kindergarten parents to orientation sessions. Curriculum evenings with the faculty are held for Pre-K through fifth grade. Lower School teachers send regular updates to parents describing classroom activities. Parents volunteer for field trips and classroom demonstrations. In Pre-K and kindergarten, parents cook with small groups of children, using the kitchen adjacent to the kindergarten classrooms. First graders invite parents to participate in a Family Share project that describes family traditions, backgrounds, and cultures.Recognizing that it may be difficult for working parents to attend school concerts and plays, Riverdale livestreams many of these events as well as the fifth grade graduation. Some parent meetings with the Lower School head also are videotaped.
